We recently overhauled the routing platform on the Spilsby Internet Solutions network due to some strange performance-related issues and more importantly, IPv6 router solicitations were failing approximately 80% of the time.
The issue was traced to the absolutely shitty Realtek NICs which were used in the routers; these cards work fine for IPv4 traffic but when you start pushing anything like IPv6 or 802.1q through them, the performance falls like a lemming plummeting off a cliff.
These were replaced with some Intel NICs and everything is working smoothly again; there is certainly something to be said about having the official driver for a piece of hardware not only in the kernel but actually written and tested by the manufacturer.
For those who value my technical opinion, the better chipsets to use on a Linux box are primarily Broadcom or Intel - some cards don't handle MTUs over 1500 very gracefully - both of these chipsets do perfectly. |
